The Fat Lady Has Sung
And so Fiesta de San Antonio has drawn to a close. We didn’t do as much as we did once upon a time, but we still went out and had us a good time.
Thursday afternoon The Warden asked if I wanted to head downtown to meet a couple of friends at the San Fernando Festival. Suspiciously I asked, “How late are we gonna stay out? I have to work tomorrow.” The Warden was off. She said until around 9:00pm. I could deal with that so I agreed to go. Maybe I should’ve known better, but we got home around thirty minutes past midnight. Subconsciously I must’ve known I was being duped because I didn’t drink much. I had a snootful of Canadian whisky on the way there, and four beers after we got there. I felt pretty decent Friday morning, albeit a tad tired.
Friday we did nothing.
Saturday morning we went to the King William Fair in a beautiful, old Victorian neighborhood downtown. There’s always a diverse mix of people at this event, and lots of doggies dressed up in various not-so-doggy attire. For example, a bulldog in a pink tutu, a Chihuahua with mini aviator goggles on (My son snapped a pic with his phone which I hope to post), etc. We lounged around, listened to music, and had a few cocktails. Some friends showed up after a while and we mixed with them until around 5:00pm when we headed back to the San Fernando Festival. The Warden’s sister, sister’s husband, a niece and her boyfriend met us there. Oh, and the kids were with us this time. The Warden was just primed enough to be slurry of speech and wobbly of gait. We ate, drank, and bullshitted for a couple of hours until The Warden realized she was too fuckin’ drunk to stand up. So we left around 8:30, which was fine. I’d been sipping the Canadian Whisky very slowly so I was good to drive.
Sunday, The Warden, The Boy and I met a couple at St. Paul Square (Sunset Station) at around 2:00pm to listen to a little blues music. The San Antonio Blues Society sponsored the event, which was, although sorely under attended, was very good. We saw Catherine Denise first. She’s a lawyer, a very good guitar player, and has an excellent voice. The next performer was a way talented musician named Carolyn Wonderland. She was really good and her sincere modesty was great. The last performer we saw was a big ol’ wonderful woman named Diunna Greenleaf. We saw her and her band, Blue Mercy, last year at a little bar called Casbeers. She opened for legendary blues pianist Willie "Pinetop" Perkins. Anyway, this woman can put on a show. She was so much fun. The Warden was taking pictures of her from the foot of the stage and when Diunna was roaming around the tables singing to people. The pics weren’t digital, so we’ll have to wait until we get the film developed and I scan them. If you ever get a chance to see this woman, do it. She’s amazing.
We got home early and watched our beloved Spurs get their asses kicked by the Sacramento Kings.
I took Monday off just for the hell of it.

Memory Du Jour:
Arizona, mid / late eighties (I can’t remember)
I was home on leave. Nay came over for dinner. Mom cooked Chinese food. She’d spent a few years teaching English in China so she was pretty good at it. Nay ate the shit out of some veggies, something she wasn’t known to do. She told Mom her vegetables were the only ones she’d ever eaten and liked.
Quote of the Day:
“You wanna see a picture of my pussy?” – The Warden to a girlfriend, April 27 2006, San Fernando Festival, San Antonio, TX
Note: She has a picture of one of our cats as her background on her cell phone. I thought I was gonna die of laughter. It SO caught me off guard.

Sounds like you and the Warden had quite the Alcoholiday Weekend. I think taking off Monday was definitely a good idea. It should always be part of such a weekend.
My kind of weekend. We should hang out.
Quit having so much gawd damn fun! Some of us have to work for a living lol.
you party animals!!!
Ha LOL about the pussy thing!! I need to have some drinks with the warden it seems!! Fiesta is a blast.. That is all I have to say! Glad you guys had a good time and with your kids even!!
I've never been to the Fiesta - seems as if there is lots to see - and sounds like lots of fun. I love San Antonio!
So you are a whisky man? Me too - just not a man. Whats your whisky of choice?
Lol to The Warden.
Stringman: It was quite the Alcoholiday! If you ever get to San Antonio, let me know.
Y: Sorry! I’m done for a while. :-)
WebMiz: Not so much any more in all reality....but it’s still in my blood ;-)
Whistler: Yes...It was mucho funny!
Sheila: You need to do Fiesta if you never have. Hotels in town can be hard to find, but there are plenty of places to stay on the fringes of SA. The whisky of choice this time was Canadian Mist. I also like Jim Beam, W.L. Weller, Gentleman Jack, Bushmills, an American whisky I can’t recall right now (very common) and Crown. Also known to sip on rum. :-)
