Gettin' Old

The Boy turned 18 on Saturday. It’s hard to believe. He’s such a good boy young man. I’m very fortunate. I can’t imagine how much things would’ve sucked had he been like I was when I was 18. Y and Nay can vouch for my delinquency.

Anyway...we (The Boy, The Girl, The Nephew and The Warden) went out to P.F. Chang’s for his birthday dinner Saturday evening. The Warden and I sipped bourbon and cut up with the waiter and the kids. The food was delicious. Not authentic Chinese, but very good nonetheless. The lettuce wraps were fantastic. After dinner, we walked around the outdoor mall, buying a few things and secretly(?) getting ideas for Christmas presents. It was a good evening.
If I think about it real hard, having an eighteen-year-old son makes me feel old. So I don't think too much about it!

Today I’m off to the doctor. I felt a little blah for most of last week, but figured this winter crud would pass as it usually does. It didn’t, and it reached a crescendo on Sunday when I was just about completely out of commission. Yesterday I was positively miserable, and spent the day doing nothing but aching, sneezing, dining on various medicines, blowing my nose, and generally feeling sorry for myself. Oh, and girls, before you give me the “guys are such babies when they’re sick” mantra…I did get up and get dinner going before The Warden got home from work and offered to take over. So there.
Update: It's the flu; influenza A to be exact. "The kind that won't kill ya" according to the doc.

Here's a picture of Mom and an old family friend taken at a neighbor's house before they went to a Beverly Hills costume party in 1966. She was 33 at the time.

I was sitting here this morning reading blogs, checking mail and drinking coffee when I heard the local news channel talking head say, “We have a breaking news alert…” Being a conscientious citizen, I stopped what I was doing and rotated my chair 45 degrees clockwise to focus my attention on what I thought might be something somewhat important.

The “breaking news alert” turned out to be a report about a shooting in a New Bedford, Massachusetts nightclub. Wow. Now that’s something I really needed to know. From what I remember of New Bedford, a shooting there is about as unusual as a shooting in Compton.

Why our local news dunces decided this should be flagged as breaking news is beyond me. I’d like to know what the criteria is for a story to be categorized as breaking news. Would a car accident in Hound Dog Acres, AZ be newsworthy? (Yes, it really exists). Where do you draw the line?

Personally, I’d rather see more information on the runoff election we’re having here between Henry Bonilla (R) and Ciro Rodriguez (D) starting today. They (news dunces) run tiny (but very informative) bits about how truthful the mudslinging commercials are, and I’d like to see more of that.

Hope you get to feeling better. I've been blah myself - not sure what it is. But I could blame all of the sugar in these dozens of Christmas Cookies that I am chowing down.

Hey, don't feel old. I could have an 18 year old too and in fact many of my friends at my 20th HS reunion last month do. Some are even Grannies already. And here I am with a 4 year old and preparing to get preggers with another.

That is if Santa stops by and fills my stocking with his Candy Cane of Joy of course. =O)

You were naughty back then but you turned out great! Does young man plan to follow in Dads footsteps and go Guard? You're not old, just seasoned.
Hope you feel better soon.

ooooh, SO GLAD to hear you're not going to die! :D

yeah, seriously, on the 'breaking' news thing...

is it 'breaking news' when another person gets stuck between the aisles at Walmart in Bumfuck Nowhere and need forklifted out because they're so fat? NO. It's just another typical day. :D

Don't feel old Karlos.

Glad you are feeling better - that flu shit is going around up here too.

Great pic of your Mom!

I have always wondered if "breaking news" leaves splinters or shards.

Margie: Christmas cookies could well be the cause of your blahness ;-) I skipped our 20 year reunion. After seeing the pictures of some of the people, I’m glad I did!

Bunny-Early: Naughty is right. Thanks for your kindness. The Boy will be going to a local university. Sometime next year. $Cha-Ching$

WebMiz: I’m kinda glad I didn’t die too ;-)

Sheila: Yes…the flu shit is wreaking havoc down here. I’m still feeling the residual effects.

Seventh Sister: I’m not sure, but I’m glad I have protective lenses when I watch TV…just in case!
