Three Word Wednesday

The rules, if you wanna call 'em that, are here.

Endless
Ought
Shadow

Digging
Continuation of "Arriving"
She woke to the sound of a couple arguing. Lying on her back, Michelle swiveled her head to the right, toward the small oak entertainment center. The clock on the cable box screamed 7:13am. She shifted her gaze to the narrow vertical window on the right side of the front door. “Fuck, this couch is uncomfortable!” The shadow from a small branch of the maple tree in the front yard was cast perfectly across both eyes, right to left. When she propped herself up on her elbows to take inventory of her surroundings, the shadow that had once protected her weary eyes from the harshness of reality remained in place; now cast uselessly upon the white cushion of the old couch.

She shifted her weight to the left and shielded her eyes with her right forearm. Falling upon her like a dreadful polluted waterfall, memories of the last two days flooded her mind. It hadn’t been a dream. The memories of him were real, and they were pitilessly endless.

Michelle swung her legs off the edge of the couch and sat up. The wood floor creaked a little as she transferred her weight from her hindquarters to her feet. Her knees creaked a little as her lower extremities took on the responsibility of keeping her upright and stable. She let out a little noise – that noise those over forty often make when trying to resist (or deny) the effects of age.

Her first coherent thought was that she should cook breakfast for her sister Janice and her husband. Fuck that was the next. Michelle was going to hit the bakery two doors down. Coffee, a cheese Danish, and the paper on her sister’s front porch – Only a block from the beach. Perfect.

Michelle knew she ought to be doing something else – Something productive – Something like starting the slow dig out of the hole into which she had unfortunately fallen.

Very nice! I'm beginning to have a feel for Michelle :-)

I agree with Arlene. I'm now anxious to find not only what happens to Michelle, but what happened to cause her to leave in the first place.

Love the detail of the shadow falling across her eyes, then the couch.

Is Michelle going to think that what she ran from was better than where she is sitting now? The arguing in the background - was that because she was visiting and in the way or was it a normal occurrence at the house? Does Yvette put up with the same situation Michelle ran from? There are so many ways this can go. What I like best about this "episode" is the "fuck that" about making breakfast and getting the cheese danish, coffee and reading the newspaper. And, ahhh...the beach - sweet! Dammit, she has done too much over the years to cater to her husband. It's about time she just did what she wanted for herself. I love your story, Carlos, don't quit.
