Dumbing Down

This is going to be a permanent post on my blog. I intend to add entries to it as I encounter instances of how things are getting mo’ stupider in our society. The most recent entries will be at the top. Enjoy.

I saw a preview of a local tee-vee news story last night that promised to inform us how contagious H1N1 flu is; instead of using the word contagious, the subtitle read “How ‘catchy’ is it?” Catchy? Are you kidding me? Really? Come on, dudes.

Back in the months following the September 11th attacks on the WTC, anthrax was all the rage. During the first few days of furious coverage, they referred to a particular form of anthrax properly – as subcutaneous anthrax. Then someone somewhere decided the Amurcan public was too fucking stupid to a) know what that meant; and b) Use a dictionary. So they started referring to it as “under-the-skin anthrax.”

Commercials lately have stopped using the word “antacid.” They now use the term “acid reducer.”

Kyra Phillips, of CNN, was reading some dude’s quote and changed the word he used (abhor) to despise. WTF?

There are some pretty dumb people out there. But if you don't know what abhor means, picking up the dictionary is a good idea for you anyway.

Cool idea for the permanent, updateable post. How will we know when it's been added to? Will it automatically be at the top of the posts? Maybe you should set up one of those cool flashing light thingees like on the dumbasses in government blog to alert us.
