10/11 TUESDAY

Yesterday was supposed to be a day off for me. I had a doctor’s appointment and a meeting instead.

Mr. Doctor said my blood pressure was high. They tested it twice; once with one o’ them new-fangled computerized machines and once with the old-school device. The first reading was 140/100. The second was 130/90. The higher of the two falls into “Stage 1 Hypertension” and the lower is categorized as “Prehypertension” by the National Institute of Health.

Two months ago I had a lipid panel blood test for cholesterol. Mr. Doctor discussed the bad report card with me. I told him that, since that blood test, I’d been taking my candies (Zocor) regularly. I couldn’t give more blood that morning because I’d eaten a few hours before going in (Need to fast from midnight until the test).

The bright part of the appointment was that Mr. Doctor was quite pleased that I wasn’t smoking any more. He told me that it takes ten years for lungs to fully recover after quitting. He prescribed me an inhaler that’ll speed up the healing process.

Needless to say, the appointment left me feeling a little more mortal than I felt the day before.

I suppose I’ll have to give up the “bad” food now! I’m running out of vices!

The “war on smoking” has been going well. I’m on the 2nd stage of the nicotine patches. It is a month ago today that I quit and I really feel like this is going to be the last time I quit smoking.

Good job on being a non-smoker, rah, rah Cj you can do it, be a quitter!!! rah, rah Cj you can do it, be a quitter!!! :)

I know how it is getting the bad news on the cholesterol, it made me feel kind of old (not really old, just my age) thinking I have to watch those kind of things.

And man does Bush make me cringe!

p.s. do the patches assist you more better do the job of quitting smoking?

My Paps got some kind of pill to lower his cholesterol. if you are forced to give up porn, smoking AND food, you may as well be dead. Look into the pills.
Fortunately my cholesterol is still good. Must be all of the smoking, drinking and greasy cheese pizza's. I think all of the Tard's should play the lotto weekly and which ever one of us wins, should split with the others. We could all get body transplants and eat greasy pizza forever!

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the smoking. I've been using the patches. I'm on the last box of the 2nd stage of them, then I have two boxes of the last stage. I could probably get away with not continuing the patches, but the last two times I used them I didn't follow the program to the tee. Figure maybe that's why I started smoking again! The patches do kick ass. It'd be really hard not using them, which I've tried before.

I'm taking Zocor (Much more regularly the last few months). My uncle says they lowered his cholesterol big time. I just haven't been religious in taking them until recently. Hopefully the next blood test will look good.

You're lucky to have low cholesterol. The Warden is the same way. She can eat what she wants, when she wants and it stays low. That's so wrong! But she doesn't eat as much as I do. Maybe portion control is something I should focus on!

Think the lottery/body transplant thing sounds about right, especially if we retire to your luxury pad in Venezuela! Let's plan on it. What's our secret Tard handshake gonna be to bind the deal!

Hey Carlos my fellow alamo-man! Congrats on the zero smoking.. I quit a year ago only to start smoking cigars! Hell the nicotine gum was taking all of my money! Good stuff though.

Congrats on calling it quits! I don't look forward to the day I have to take Zocor...high cholesterol runs in my family...funny though, my mom is the one with the high cholesterol and she's always ate well and exercised...so sometimes I think, if it's all genetics, what's the point? But with the Zocor and everything else, her bad cholesterol has come down.

Thanks for the votes of confidence on quitting smoking. It really helps! I should’ve started this blog stuff 12 years ago, when I quit smoking then!

Well that sure sucks. I did a little reading up on your malady and found that the majority of cases occur in the young. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

Cigars eh? Back in the 70s my mom and aunt used to play a lot of word games (scrabble, boggle, Foil, etc.). While they played, they’d smoke big cigars, drink Gallo wine, and argue incessantly over acceptance of certain words. Thinking back on those days really brings a smile to my face. The profanities those two women used to hurl at one another is, I’m sure, responsible for any number of my bad habits or maybe just my sometimes-twisted view on life ;-) Regardless, I can appreciate a woman who smokes a good cigar!

High cholesterol ain’t so bad. It doesn’t hurt, and it doesn’t grow anything on the end of your nose. That’s why it’s so easy to ignore. You’re right about genetics. I think why bother often. One day I’ll post a little something about why I do. I also wonder what the point is of trying to stave it off, but I’m going to give it a whirl in hopes that, between quitting smoking and lowering my cholesterol, I might get a few years added to whatever my lifespan would have been had I not made any changes.

The old-school device is more accurate providing the person knew what he/she was doing. Congrats, on having the huevos to stop smoking. I plan on trying someday myself. So watch your salts and your fats. Maybe the next results will be better.
